170% rise in numbers turning to foodbanks in last 12 months

Trussell Trust foodbanks have seen the biggest rise in numbers given emergency food since the charity began in 2000. Almost 350,000 people have received at least three days emergency food from Trussell Trust foodbanks during the last 12 months, nearly 100,000 more than anticipated and close to triple the number helped in 2011-12.

A packed hall on Friday 8th February enjoyed a feast of entertainment and good fayre all in aid of The Ayrshire East Foodbank. The evening was a great success and the tremendous work of the foodbank was highlighted. Thank you to everyone who supported the event...next years date announced soon.

The Trussell Trust's UK foodbank network works in partnership with local churches and communities to open foodbanks in local communities. There are now over 200 foodbanks in the UK. Last year the foodbank network fed over 128,000 people nationwide. Read more

Local MP Cathy Jamieson has praised the volunteers who have set up East Ayrshire's first Foodbank.

The MP visited the Foodbank, which helps individuals and families in crisis across East Ayrshire, including in Cumnock and Doon Valley.

The Foodbank relies on donations from the public, and people in need are referred by health and social work professionals.
